11 – 17 – 2015: These Walleye were caught working the deep ledges and main lake basin structure. We do not go to the deepest hole in the lake and catch fish. We are looking for any structure that is on and or connected to the main lake basin and then zooming our electronics down into the water to locate the Walleye. We have been working this fall pattern since the early 1980′s, this was a trade secret until 10 or 15 years ago. Remember, water temp and turn over will dictate when a lake will have these easy to catch Walleye going deep in our area lakes. Every lake will behave a little differently, on the shallow weedy lakes, this pattern is not as effective.
The darker water lakes with multiple 30 to 55 ft deep wholes, this pattern works well once the thermocline has completely dissolved out of the wholes. This pattern is the same on our Rivers and Flowages although we do not find thermocline in the deeper water in the rivers as the decreasing water temp seems to move the fish into those wholes. If the Flowages you are fishing have a few flooded lakes in them you will find thermocline inside those sections of the Flowages if the flooded lake is deep enough. The fish will be down deep in those areas after the turn over takes place and they are easy to catch. Also, the river channels will have Walleye, Perch and Crappie this time of year.
The deep clear lakes where we have a lot of water from 40 to 70 ft of water or more this pattern kicks into high gear and fish are caught at 12 noon all fall long but, turn over has to of taken place first and there are several lakes with this depth in our area including dark water lakes that are this deep or deeper.
